Net Worth: How do you stack up?

Canadians can take heart in the fact that most of us are actually worth a lot more today than we were a decade and a half ago. According to information compiled by Statistics Canada, the net worth of the average Canadian nearly doubled in the past 15 years_to $83,600 in 1995, from $44,700 in 1980.
As the graph below shows, growth in average net worth for Canadians was slow in the early 1990s, but improved as the economy grew out of the recession. In 1995, the average Canadian's net worth grew by $1,900, an increase of 2.4% from 1994
Net worth refers to the total: value of your assets (what you own) minus your liabilities (what you owe.) Calculating your net worth can provide you with a useful snapshot of your overall financial health.
